William
J Turner Pty Ltd is the owner of the FlowTran and SIROGAS software for transient
simulation of single phase fluid flow in pipeline networks.
Principal
Mr Turner is the Managing
Director and owner of William J Turner Pty Ltd founded in 1993. He is the
principal author of most of the SIROGAS program, and the sole author all other
parts of FlowTran.
Mr. W J Turner was until
Feb 1993 Senior Project Manager of Fluid Mechanics of Mineral Processing in the
CSIRO Division of Mineral & Processing Engineering. CSIRO is the
pre-eminent research arm of the Australian Government. Under his supervision
the fluid mechanics and chemistry of a wide variety of mineral processing
systems were simulated including the HIsmelt process being installed in a pilot
plant in
Simulation of fluid flow in
pipeline networks was also included in this project area. Since 1983 Mr. Turner
and others in CSIRO have developed SIROGAS and other programs for simulation of
transients in gas, liquid and 2-phase flow in pipeline networks. Prior to this
Mr. Turner was with the Australian Atomic Energy Commission researching
improved methods of simulating neutron kinetics and steam-water flow in nuclear
reactor cooling systems during loss of coolant accidents.
While in CSIRO Mr Turner
was also responsible for the development and installation of the SIROGAS real
time model at the AGL pipeline control centre in Sydney, simulation of valve
closing and other transients on the ESSO Longford to Long Island Point, and
development of advanced methods of leak detection.
Mr Turner published over 30
papers in the open literature, presented papers at major international
conferences, and conducted numerous seminars on pipeline simulation. He is a
Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, a Chartered Registered
Professional Engineer, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute for Energy.
FlowTran including
SIROGAS from CSIRO
William J Turner Pty Ltd
now owns all SIROGAS related software from CSIRO. It has further extended
SIROGAS and developed the FlowTran software. These programs calculate the
steady state and transient behaviour of fluid in complex pipeline networks.
FlowTran includes a MS Windows Graphical User Interface and makes preparation
of reports in word processors and spread sheets a dream. The company supports
all FlowTran and SIROGAS users, and actively seeks new users. FlowTran is now
available for the following applications:
Offline studies.
Real time simulation driven by real
time data from a pipeline control system.
Leak Detection.
Batch Tracking.
Special Applications required by
clients.

Current users of SIROGAS
are Epic Energy, East Australian Pipelines, Agility Sydney, Agility Canberra,
Goldfields Gas Transmission, Agility Brisbane, NTGAS, Korean Gas, Beijing
Satellite Science & Technology Co. Ltd., Foxboro and MITS.
Mr Turner has consulted to
Alinta Gas, Western Power, International Risk Management, ESSO Australia,
Tenneco, Gas & Fuel, NTGAS, BHP Petroleum, AGL, CMPS&F, Energy Equity,
WAPET, Appache, Epic Energy, Agility and East Australian Pipelines amongst
others.
Pipeline Simulation
The company expects that
routine use of SIROGAS will be done directly by gas pipeline owners or by
consultants renting SIROGAS. However the company will be pleased to undertake
simulation tasks especially where difficult, new or unusual simulations are
required.
Real Time Simulation
The principal has wide
experience of computer simulation and interaction with real time systems and
will be pleased to undertake work in this general area.
FlowTran Real time
simulation models are currently operated by Epic Energy for the Moomba to
Gases & Liquids
FlowTran 1.61 and SIROGAS 2.901,
the current releases are mainly used for natural gas pipeline networks. Other
equations of state including liquids are available and the programs been used
for ethane in the dense phase region.
